I WILL NOT TOAST IN THIS BREAD.
I WILL INSTEAD POST IN THIS THREAD.

Never done an online D&D campaign, but I've done one (1) with friends before, so I kind of know what I'm doing.
Specific info? And how serious is this game going to be? ...How serious CAN it be with you and Shplane invoved? :P
But really, is this going to be a D&D game that resembles the Super Happy Fun Undead RP in tone, or complete Serious Business? XD

Ooh, a Serious Business Game. That sounds like Serious Fun.
How is this done? Character sheets and basically 'roleplay' in chat/forum, with a GM? Or is there an online D&D application that is possessed of epic win?

I've found a set of programs designed for playing D&D and other tabletop games over the internet. We'll also be using an AIM chat room.

Sweet. Which tools should I get, and when do we start?
Also, AIM? Can we use a different chat, like MSN, instead? Oh, wait... Can Windows Live Messenger connect to AIM? =/

You want the maptool and the character tool (assuming you know how D&D 3.5 character creation works, either roll yourself a character or use 30 Point Buy), though it wouldn't hurt you to get all of them. I'm also sure it wouldn't be very much trouble for you to download AIM 6 or something.

We're starting when we've all got our characters (and ourselves) ready. This means we're waiting on Shplane's friend Fran and our friends Stain and Arashi. Once we're all ready, we'll arrange a regular time to do the sessions.

Okay, downloaded. Will update... though downloading AIM6 is iffy. I don't want any more messengers than I already have. Can we possibly use IRC instead?
Also, very important: What should our character levels be, and what kind of setting is this in? While I've played D&D once before, and know the basics of what everything does, I'm not sure of what will fit in, and I'll need to consult with the (relative) experts regarding the more complex stuff. On that note, do you use any chat other than AIM? If so, which and what username/email address?

I would set up an irc channel for this, but I'm sure you'd agree that it'd be a hassle to teach everyone in the group how irc works and what all the commands are and such. It'd also be better for the social atmosphere if most of us were talking/webcamming.
You have me on MSN already, but I don't use it much. We're using AIM because everyone else in the group has it.

Everyone starts from level 1, and at least the first part of this campaign will be set in a green, sunny place called Ridgingshire. Think rural England. I'd be happy to answer any other questions either here or over an IM.

Btw, I apparently can't sign up for an AIM ID because (get this) my postal code contains more than five characters. >_> Go figure. Are you SURE we can't use IRC or MSN?
On that note, no, I don't agree it's a hassle to teach everyone in the group how IRC works. I figured it out in literally five minutes using the basic mIRC client, and later discovered IceChat, a client that makes IRC simpler and easier to use, as well as simply more streamlined.
Alternatively, you could give me a bogus five-digit (wtf?) ZIP code that will fit through THIS filter.
