Take the tripods in The War of the Worlds (H.G Wells' novel, not the passable Cruise movie). They've been repeatedly lampooned for the fact that they have three legs. Sure, you don't really see many things with three legs walking around in fiction, but that's because three legs is a stupid number of legs to have, unless you happen to be a camera.

2. I lol'd. As a bisexual, I can attest to the fact that most of us aren't that easily offended. She didn't intend any slight toward gay people - I wouldn't be madly in love with someone who wasn't open-minded regarding orientation. Anyway, as long as 'gay' isn't immediately followed by something to the effect of '...which is BAD! RAWR!', we don't give a rat's arse.

1. Okay, fair enough.. I happen to disagree with the premise that this particular original idea is 'fucking stupid.' If they burned in the sunlight, rather than just being all sparkly, a lot of the basic settings (school etc) wouldn't work at all, instead of just being awkward to avoid.

2. I think the 'and that's bad' was implied, since she was ranting at something before calling it 'gay.' To be honest, I was just nitpicking, I'm not personally offended by the wording, but I thought I'd point that out.

It's probably worth noting that Stoker's Dracula didn't burn in sunlight - he was merely weakened, and unable to use his powers. My vampires are the same way. Meyer also openly admitted that she didn't do any research whatsoever on the subject of vampires. I'd have thought Stoker was required reading if you're writing about vampires.
