Because it's an awesome game.
It just feels so REAL, like the world you're in is actually there, and the people there actually matter. In fact, they seemed so realistic that I couldn't bring myself to rob them, kill them all , or enslave them (Yes you can enslave people, you get 250 caps per person [the denizens of the Capitol Wasteland use bottlecaps as currency]), even though I had planned to play an evil character. It just felt like I was killing an actual person almost, and not just a character in a game. Largely because of the awesome voice acting, and the fact that the characters actually ACT like real people. They'll say "fucK", they'll scream about not wanting to die if they run away, hell they even have sex (Though only when you're not looking), and you can hire a prostitute at one part (Again it doesn't show you having sex, she just lays down on the bed in your hotel room and it's kind of assumed that you fucked when you "go to sleep").
Of course it's not just the people, the weapons and enemies and everything feel far more "real" than in almost any other game I've ever played. The AI is intelligent, guns, bombs etc. fire fairly realistically, actually need repair and maintenance (And you have to get parts from another gun to repair them), and will blow the pieces off of enemies if you hit them in the right spots. You can get your arms and legs broken, or get a concussion (Broken arms lead to lowered accuracy, legs reduce speed, concussion causes your character's vision to occasionally blur or black out, and also seems to reduce accuracy), as well as breaking your enemies' limbs.
And you can beat robots to death with sledgehammers. Which is the most awesome thing to happen in a game ever.
